2011 Emirates Junior Scottish Cup fourth round, 21 January 2012, Moor Park, Lanark
UNDERDOGS Kinnoull inflicted a painful defeat to highly fancied Lanark to fire themselves into the last 16 of the Emirates Junior Scottish Cup.
Bookies had Lanark 1/2 to win, 10/3 for a draw and 10/3 for a Kinnoull upset, but it was the men from Perth that tore up the forecast.
Winger David Carr and striker Gary Fraser did the damage with a brace apiece and condemned the home side to their first defeat in eight games.
Heavy conditions led to some awful football yet Lanark’s Alan McCrum came close with a wind assisted effort that Duncan Bruce had to be sharp to tip over.
And some nice link up play from Kinnoull’s Fraser and Adam O’Connor let Chris Webster shoot only for it to be blocked by Chris Walker.
McCrum tried his luck again from a long range free kick but it hit Richard Doig and sailed just over the bar.
On the stroke of half time, Fraser found Carr and his 18 yard drive beat Ross Hyslop and went through David Middleton’s legs to open the scoring.
After the break a Lanark mix up allowed Fraser to burst forward and slot past the hesitating Hyslop for the second. It was looking like Kinnoull would add to their impressive five games without loss on the road.
Arguably the goal of the match came from Carr who drove at the Lanark defence and unleashed a venomous strike into the net via the bar on the hour mark. And seconds later Gary Gow denied Fraser before the striker scored directly from a corner kick. His curling effort fooled keeper Hyslop and bounced into the net to wrap up the scoring on 67 minutes.
A truly superb result for the McBookie.com Central Division side, one that brought plaudits from around the east and west alike.
