Fanzone Number 13

This week we spoke to Pumpherston fan Gordon Bastick

Pumpherston

When did you first start watching your club?

I started following Pumpherston when they were reformed back in 1990

Why did you start supporting the club?

I had just moved to West Lothian when Pumpherston were reformed and my ex inlaws were from the village and followed them so I tagged along

What’s the greatest game you have been to?

Has to be a 4-3 League cup victory over Linlithgow Rose back in season 1997/8 Goals from Brian White (2), Stevie McIlhone and Jimmy Dunn, will always remember the Rose committee were having a wee meeting down the bottom corner of the ground after the game maybe plotting the managers exit, they must have gave him a second chance because the axe never fell on that occasion.

Best moment as a fan?

Finishing second in the South league and being promoted to the old First Division under Stevie Pittman in 2003/4 season it was the second time in 3 seasons we were promoted. Broxburn Athletic were champions that year

Worst moment as a fan?

Being thrown out of the Scottish Junior cup in 2007/8 season  after beating Shotts for a clerical signing error, we were 2-0 down at halftime and came back to win 3-2 goals came Kenny Martin(20 and Dean Fleming.

Favourite Junior ground?

I’d have to say Newtongrange’s New Victoria Park. Great Facilities.

Favourite all time player and why?

Billy McAlaney god rest his soul, great player and absolute gentleman on and off the pitch. Could play a bit as well, will always remember the time he had a clash of heads with opposition players he went off for some treatment brushed it off and came back on all bandaged up and finished the match.

Best food in the juniors?

Now you’re talking my favourite subject, Fauldhouse Utd steak pies think they’re from Paddy Brannings shop in the village.

Are you in favour of the pyramid system?

Not really fussed If it happens or not.

Any rule changes you would like to see?

Like in ice hockey I would like to see a line in between goaline and halfway line to be used for offside.

Since you started watching football what has changed?

Positively?
Social Media i.e.  Junior website such as Junior info and Pie n Bovril, twitter and Facebook, Also the fact that more clubs are going down the community club route which is better for the game
Negatively?
Referees have gotten worse, thankless job but some of the bizarre decisions they make these are getting worse.

Best performer for the club last season season?

Darren Downie a good young forward, unfortunately Bo’ness saw the potential and snapped him up during the close season.

Grass pitches or artificial and why?

Artificial I’d say, games are more likely to be played during the winter months and it can be a money spinner.

The best goal you have ever seen?

It was a League cup match against Linlithgow Rose, Stephen Payne spotted the Lithgy keeper off his line and decided to try his luck at goal from two or three yards inside his own half, the ball flew over the keepers head and straight into the net. Think that wonder goal upset our visitors as they went onto win the game 4-1 I think.

What do you enjoy most about Junior football?

Probably the fact that it cheaper to watch than senior game. And you sometimes get a good bit of banter from the terraces

What would further enhance the junior experience?

I think the movement towards community clubs and the increased interaction with youth clubs will only lead to more supporters in the future, which should attract more fans at the games.

If you could make improvements to the ground what would they be?

Extend and improve the changing rooms and fix the enclosure roof and inside it.

Where would you like the club to be in ten years’ time?

Just too still be competing and playing football, there are that many clubs that have struggled over the years and ended up folding.

Your best eleven of all time?

Based on the players I’ve seen at Pumpherston
1. Mark Osbourne
2. Dominic Marratea
3.Stevie McIlhone
4. Billy McAlaney
5. Colin Slater
6. Brian Sheldon
7. Stephen Payne
8. Graham Baird
9. Chris Geddes
10.David Swan
11.Kenny Martin
Subs: Roddy MacDonald, Kipper Lynch, Chris King, Pody Leitch, Mark Reid(gk)
