Fanzone Interview Number 17

For this edition we spoke to Auchinleck Tabot fan Linda Rodden

When did you first start watching your club?

Around 2008

Why did you start supporting the club?

Initially started to follow Talbot to spend time with my boyfriend, However after a few games I was hooked and couldn’t care less if he comes or not lol (joking)

What’s the greatest game you have been to?

5th Round Replay v Bonnyrigg Rose in the 2014-15 Scottish Cup replay. Going into the game I was nervous and the fact that the game was a replay after the draw at home the week before I wasn’t that optimistic. Both teams were evenly matched and playing on that dodgy sloped park. Bonnyrigg took the lead early on but we fought back with wee Butch (Brian Young) scoring the winner for us in the dying minutes. All I remember was everyone going ballistic and me ending up on my backside with the some Talbot fans helping me back up. It was a great game to remember and I am sure I’ll see many more like it.

Best moment as a fan?

7th January 2012 Getting Hearts in the Senior Scottish Cup, It was a proud moment to go to Tynecastle as a Talbot fan to play a premier league team. Although we lost 1-0 we held out heads up high. Big Andy Leishman saved a penalty and we should have had a replay, Gordon Pope scored a terrific goal that was undeservedly flagged off-side. It was later shown on TV that the linesman made the wrong decision.

Worst moment as a fan?

Its got to be the first game against Stranraer in the Senior Scottish Cup 2014. We took a lead of 2-0 and could have made it 3 when we were awarded a penalty. However Davie Gormley blew the chance and Stranraer crept back into the game with them scoring 2 goals, the second coming in injury time of the second half. Traveling back up the road it felt like a death in the family.

Best away trip and why?

It’s always great when we play East or North Scottish teams as the buzz of traveling to the game builds up the tension. Although they have a dodgy park I think Bonnyrigg Rose give a good reception.

Favourite Junior ground?

It’s got to be Beechwood Park home of Auchinleck Talbot. You can see the hard work and effort that the fans, helpers and committee have put into the place. The playing surface is brilliant and it puts to shame most playing grounds in Scottish Football.

Favourite all time player and why?

I have two and I can’t split between them. First one is Mike McCann now playing for Glenafton, For obvious reasons he is easy on the eye and when he pulled a Talbot shirt on he always gave his all. Second one is Bryan Young (Butch) I would rate as the best Talbot player of all time. His work rate effort is brilliant and can score a goal out the blue when least expected.

Best food in the juniors?

Talbot, Their wee hut pies are great.

Are you in favour of the pyramid system?

Are you in favour of a combined East/West super league?

Definitely, In my opinion this can only make the Junior leagues stronger.

What about Junior clubs in the Scottish Cup?

Yes I want the Juniors in the Senior Scottish Cup. Linlithgow Rose proved that the Juniors level is a decent standard.

Any rule changes you would like to see?

Bring the holders of the Scottish Amateur Cup into the Scottish Junior Cup giving them a similar opportunity as the Juniors get by entering the Senior Scottish Cup

Since you started watching football what has changed?

I’ve noticed that a lot of Seniors are dropping back into the Junior grades. Not sure why but i’ll assume it’s to get match play, paid and still play a decent standard of football.

There has been more footage coverage of the Junior grade by fans filming the game then uploading it online for others to view.

Referees using the Junior grade trying to make a name for themselves. I have seen so many poor controversial decisions by refs that I can only think they are doing it to get up the career ladder.

The best goal you have ever seen?

So many to chose from but I’ll vote for Pee Wee’s goal in the Scottish Junior Cup Final in 2015 Rugby Park. A 25 yard screamer into the back of the net.

How are the club doing this season?

By our own standards not as good as last season but overall we are still in with a shout of retaining the league and hopefully get to a final of another cup. To be the best team in the juniors year in year out is a hard feat. Sometimes its easier to be the underdogs.

Who do you really look forward to playing and why?

Cumnock, There is always an extra added buzz about this game. They are by definition our bitter rivals and our closest neighbours. Before the game all the football forums are alight with mutual snipes. Even the main press media get involved if it’s a big game.

Grass pitches or artificial and why?

Grass pitches all the way. There is still no comparison between the two. It will be a few years yet before we can say artificial is the way forward. However I am in favour of playing summer football and having a winter break. It gives time for players to rest and the park to get treated.

What do you enjoy most about Junior football?

The community feel about the place, I have only experience this in the Juniors. I see kids walking about Auchinleck, Catrine, Ochiltree and Mauchline with Talbot tops on. It gives a sense that folk want to follow their own local team rather the big two up in Glasgow. When I travel to other games especially on cup games the locals in the villages and town make us feel welcome.

What would further enhance the junior experience?

Better toilet facilities for females.

Funniest thing you have seen at a football match?

Fat overweight referees and Linesmen running about the pitch in tight shorts. Horrendous lol

If you could make improvements at the ground what would they be?

The Talbot staff and committee do a tremendous job already. There is absolutely nothing I can add

Where would you like the club to be in ten years time?

I would like to see us still riding high at the top of the Juniors. Not sure if it will still be the same format however I’ll still be there supporting.

Your best eleven of all time?

Andy Leishman
Mark Campbell
Gordon Pope
Craig Pettigrew
Martin McGoldrick
Steven White
Colin Spence
Bryan Young (Butch)
Stuart Davidson (Arnie)
Mike McCann
Kier Milliken (Milky)

One Response to “Fanzone Interview Number 17”

  1. Avatar Jim Templeton says:

I follow the Talbot, I was “Hamper Boy” with them in the late 50’s. Lots of memories such as; the first Scottish Cup win, the team arriving back in Auchinleck with the cup; Tam the Groundsman; going to Hopkins for the half time oranges; travelling around Ayrshire and the Central Belt; meeting Tam 30 years or so later at Portgordon
I stayed in Beechwood Avenue and left Auchinleck aged 15 joining the RAF. I now live in the far North but still support the “Bot”!
