Earlier today I caught up with Bo’ness United Skipper Chris Donnelly ahead of the new season…

You’ve had a bit of time to reflect on last season what was your thoughts?

Our aim of course was to win the league but it wasn’t to be last year. It was nice to end winning the East of Scotland Cup even though I missed the final, but it was great for the club to get silverware.
The Scottish Cup was also disappointing but overall the trophy win made it a decent season.

Can winning a trophy be a catalyst for further success?

I would hope so, in my seven years at the club we have never had much joy in cups what with difficult draws and bad luck so hopefully our luck is changing in the cups. Saying that we have won three league titles during that period so we have had success. This season we will go out with the aim of winning everything and hopefully we do better in the league and Scottish cup than what we did last time around.

No Senior Scottish Cup again this season, will that help?

It might mean less games but for me I always want to be in it as it means for us we have either won the league or the Scottish Cup. Sure, it might mean you play extra games at the end of the season but for me you want to be involved in it.

You have signed a new two year contract, what would you like to achieve?

The only thing I haven’t won is the Scottish, so that is something I would like to rectify. It’s been a great seven years at the club and I just want to continue to play well, see the club be successful and win things.

Pre-season coming up are you ready for it?

I know what to expect, though it’s always a horrible thing at the start. I’ve done enough of them to know what’s coming, and I always try to keep in shape during the close season. Even when we are back at training I will do a few miles on the off days. I’m not a huge fan of friendlies but they are welcome in pre-season as it means we are nearly there.

Several new signings have been confirmed what do you know about them?

They are all well-known players and high profile signings. It’s going to be a very strong squad with a lot of talent and ability. There will be plenty of competition for places and it’s exciting for the club.

Who do you see as your main rivals this season?

It has to be the usual suspects. Kelty and Bonnyrigg will both be strong and Linlithgow will be there or there a bouts as ever. It’s going to be a good league this year.
