Red Star Send Out Goalkeeping SOS

By Chief Reporter Tom Scott

RED STAR .A.F.C. manager Mark MacKay has sent out a close season S.O.S. –  please help us find a reliable goalkeeper, writes Tom Scott.

MacKay, who was a prolific goal scorer in a junior football career which spanned such clubs as Baillieston,  Cumbernauld, Blantyre Vics, Lesmahagow, Rob Roy and Rutherglen Glencairn, has explored every available avenue in his attempt to find a reliable custodian between the posts.

Preparing for his second full season in charge at the East End team, who play in the Glasgow and District Saturday Morning Amateur Football League, Mark revealed:  “I pride myself on having a good professional set-up.

“We look after the players well – on and off the park – including going to Soccer World for something to eat. “I have a good bunch of guys to be honest, but the stumbling block is not being able to sign a quality goalkeeper who is reliable.

“My outfield players training is based on working with the ball – especially at this time of pre-season – but find it difficult even trying to work on set-pieces (especially corners) when you are never guaranteed a goalkeeper will be in place.

“Attitude and application is everything in my book. “I worked with some great managers in junior football and learned from guys like Dougie Bell and Ross Anderson.

“If truth be told, lacking a consistent goalkeeper probably cost us the league last season. “I don’t do things half-hearted, and that is why my priority is centred around a good No 1 – or if possible two goalkeepers, who will be given proper, specialist coaching.

“I even contacted the Shot Stoppers Goalkeeping Academy to see if they had anybody available or could offer me some help. “Their Head Group Coach highly recommended I contact site to get the word out there, so I am hoping this article prompts a response from just about anywhere!”

MacKay, who scored goals for fun in a successful three-year stint at Tynecastle A.F.C., took heart from Red Star’s West and Scottish Cup exploits against Thorn Athletic and Haldane last season. Now the dedicated manager, who won a league championship medal at Lesmahagow Juniors, is hoping to take them onto a completely new level.
