Stallions Finish Great Season With 16-1 Win At Stranraer

Stranraer 1 Renfrew Ladies 16

Report by Alan Liddell

Renfrew Ladies ended their season in style with a 16-1 win at Stranraer. The victory was the 18th win in 18 games and completed a perfect season for the New Western Park side.

There were early chances for both Lindsay Fitzpatrick and Natalie O’Neill, but in each case they were smothered by the Stranraer keeper. The opening goal came in the 6th minute when Karen Baillie found space and shot home from 18 yards.

Renfrew almost doubled their lead but Natalie’s shot across the keeper as it went wide of the far post. Lee Rossi then sent a defence splitting pass through to Lindsay, but she shot went wide of the target. Stranraer were playing a high line and time and time again Renfrew were finding space in behind their defence.

Karen sent a ball through to Claire who ran clear before unselfishly squaring to Janice McIntyre and the captain made no mistake by doubling the visitors lead. Renfrew were on the front foot and were pushing for more, when they were hit by a sucker punch.

Possession was given away in midfield and Stranraer picked up the loose ball, and piled forward. Although keeper Sam McQuillian got a hand to the shot she couldn’t keep it out and was 2-1.

Clare then hit the post before forcing a good save from Stranraer’s keeper. Renfrew went further ahead when Karen played in Lindsay on the left. She swept a cross into Claire who slipped the ball under the keeper to make it 3-1. It was soon 4-1 as Jane headed a ball forward into the path of Natalie, who ran clear before passing to Sammy Jo Smith 12 yards out. She made no mistake as Renfrew extended their lead.

Debbie McGarrell then came close with a spectacular effort which was goal bound until it hit a defender and bounced clear. Just before the break, Janice shot from 25 yards, and when the effort came back off the crossbar Karen reacted quickest, with the keeper stranded, to finish and make it 5-1 at the interval.

Within a minute of the restart a quick throw from Karen found Sammy who squared to Claire and she finished well. 6-1 soon became 7-1 when Sammy crossed to find Karen unmarked in middle of penalty box and she finished well to complete her hat trick.

Claire then got her own hat trick and made it 8-1, with a precise strike from the edge of the box. Renfrew then shuffled the pack with Debbie, Eilidh, Karen and Natalie replaced by Gail Hawthorn, Sian Francis, Erin Gould and Sophie Laird.

Within moments of being introduced there was a fine solo effort from Sian, chasing a loose ball from just inside the Stranraer half, running in on goal before firing a low shot past the keeper to make it 9-1. There was a long range effort from Sammy which was just over the bar after good work from Erin on the right. Sammy then played in Sian, who squared to Gail and she passed into the empty net to bring up double figures.

Sammy then slipped a pass through to Claire. She still had a bit of work to do but beat the last defender before making it 11-1. Renfrew were awarded a penalty after Claire’s run was brought to an abrupt end, and Sophie dispatched it for her first League goal of the season to widen the gap.

Stranraer had a chance with a breakaway, but their player shot wide before Renfrew went further ahead. Sammy passed through to Erin who squared to Janice who tapped in to make it 13-1, which was soon 14-1 with another solo effort from Claire, sprinting clear before finishing well.

Sian then made space for herself but was unfortunate to see her effort come back off the post before Gail got her 2nd, after Claire squared for her, to make it 15-1. With moments remaining Claire sprinted clear and lobbed the keeper to make it 16-1, completing her own double hat trick in the process.

At the end of a successful season Renfrew Ladies have won their first League title. Thanks to everyone involved for a memorable season, and here’s to next season in the First Division. Also thanks to the other sides in the division for their efforts this year and good luck to them for next season.

Renfrew: Sam, Jane, Debbie, Eilidh, Lee, Janice, Lindsay, Sammy, Natalie, Claire, Karen. Subs: Sian, Gail, Erin, Sophie.
