Wanderers Go Forth With Three of New Signings

By Chief Reporter Tom Scott

FORTH Wanderers manager Jamie McKenzie insists he was confident last season’s McBookie.com Central District League Second Division champions would come good after five successive domestic defeats – thanks to an injection of experienced signings, writes Tom Scott.

KEVIN BRADLEY, pictured in action for Pollok against Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, has signed for Forth Wanderers.

The Kingshill Park boss has recruited ex-Clyde, Airdrie and Ayr United central midfielder David Dunn from Cambuslang Rangers, former Pollok winger Kevin “Taz” Bradley and striker Roddy Hunter, who had stints at Dumbarton, Pollok and Rob Roy.

Said Jamie:  “After winning the title with a relatively young squad I should have brought in players with a bit of experience, but I decided to stick basically with them, so I was at fault in that respect.

“Our opening run of games in the First Division produced five defeats –  against Neilston, Thorniewood, Larkhall Thistle, Greenock and Cambuslang – the last of which was 8-2 and proved to be a big wake-up call.

“I realised we had to bring some experience into help the younger players, and we won 4-2 at Bellshill Athletic last Saturday.”

Forth led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Barry McGeechan and former Airdrie winger Willie McLaren. Craig Gupwell and Lachlan Tait struck again after the break.

Said Jamie:  “There is always pressure when you go on a run like we did, but I knew we would come good. “David (Dunn) has good junior experience, I knew Roddy from my time as assistant manager at Montrose, while Kevin had two spells totalling five years with Pollok, and played in last season’s Scottish Cup final against Beith Juniors.

“Willie McLaren remains a big player for us. Last season, when we beat Lanark United in a game which won us the championship, he scored all four goals in our 4-1 win, and also bagged a hat-trick in another match against Gartcairn, who were strongly fancied to get promotion.”

The next test for Jamie and his squad comes this Saturday when they make the journey to Valefield Park for a New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup first round clash against Kilbirnie Ladeside, who will still be on a high after beating Auchinleck Talbot 1-0 in last Sunday’s Ardagh Glass Ayrshire Sectional League Cup final.
