Chookie’s Blootered by Rampant Cambuslang Rangers

It was a nice cool overcast day, with the rain and wind staying away and it was a near perfect day for football. We welcomed runaway league leaders Cambuslang Rangers who were banging goals in for fun having scored 46 goals in 11 league games. They came here on top of their game, whilst Bens remained unbeaten in their last eight games and needed the points here to stay in touch.

I viewed proceedings from my usual spot in the Tommy Douglas stand.

The Lang got us underway shooting toward the pavilion it`s an even opening spell with both teams probing, Halliday picked up an early booking before McLeod tested Mailey from 18 yards, then McCrone smashes a 22 yard drive off the wall and Jackson fires the rebound wide of the near post.

Jarvie playing at left back fired a poor 22 yard free kick well over the top before Lang open their account when Gebbie sent Simeon racing into the box on the near side to slot past Mailey, 0-1. Four minutes later Lang extended their lead when a cross from the far side was deflected into the path of the unmarked Gormley who happily nodded it home, 0-2.

Bens then pulled one back when Stewart appeared to collide with a defender and fumble Jarvie`s free kick, it fell nicely for Livingston to prod home from close range, 1-2. Lang then won a soft penalty that Kilmartin duly fired into the far corner only for the ref to order a retake, he the sent Mailey the wrong way this time burying it into the near corner, 1-3.

Bens seemed to be fast asleep when Gormley in acres of space on the far side found Simeon all alone in the penalty area with the simplest of tasks to tap in, 1-4.

Stewart denied Bens twice as they tried to claw their way back into it when he parried Livingston`s shot at the near post, Livingston squared the second ball across to Hendry who flicked it on for Blackwood tearing in on the far side, but Stewart again turned his powerful shot round the far post.

Bens were to rue those missed chances when Jarvie`s corner was taken by Stewart who quickly found Bohme on the near side, his cross was met by Gormley who drove the ball past the stranded Mailey, 1-5.

The Chookie`s day just got worse when a tussle on the far side saw Blackwood get a straight red with Lang`s McLeod booked for his part in it (33), and the uphill battle became a mountain when Bohme on the near side laid off to Simeon who then teed up Gormley in the box to lash home number six, 1-6.

Bens were flat footed when Jarvie`s far side corner was launched out to Kilmartin, Mailey denied him twice before he tucked it home from a tight angle, 1-7.

Bens reshaped by replacing Connor with Gallacher (46) and Lang carried on where they left off by putting Bens on the back foot. McCrone was booked then Bens had a good spell and Livingston should have done better than fire straight at Stewart after some good work by Jarvie on the far side to tee it up for him.

McLeod on the near side then sent Bohme into the box, but Mailey denied him with a decent save, McLeod`s corner from the far side found Kerr unmarked in the box, but he somehow put his header beyond the far post from around 8 yards much to Bens relief.

Boyle on the near side urged his team mates on, laying off to Hendry, who cut it inside to Livingston, but his dipping shot from the edge of the box was inches over the cross bar. Lang were awarded another penalty that was hotly protested by Bens and D. Boyle was booked, Simeon stepped up and slammed it home to complete his hat trick, 1-8.

Lang got some fresh legs on replacing McBeth with Scott then Bens blew another great chance when Jarvie raced into the box on the far side to square across for Hendry, but he over-elaborated and the Lang defence closed him down quickly. The Lang had a penalty claim turned down in the 64th minute that looked clearer cut than the two that went before.

Kilmartin in the middle laid off to McLeod on the edge of the box, but he pulled his shot wide of the near post, then Lang replaced Kilmartin with Savarese, before Gallacher and Simeon were next to find themselves in the referee’s book.

A short corner between Gallacher and Hendry fell apart when Lang race up the park, Simeon`s cross from the far side is met by Savarese but he headed well over the bar before Lang replaced Bishop with Nolan.

McCrone laid off to Gallacher on the edge of the box, he then squared across to Livingston, but the striker pulled his shot wide of the near post. Six minutes later Bens go down to nine men as McCrone gets his second yellow after a flare up on the far side with Gebbie who was also booked. Jarvie was booked a couple of minutes later, before Lang rounded off a good day at the office when Simeon`s cross is deflected in by Soutar, 1-9.

Gotta take that one firmly on the chin as Lang showed why they are blazing the trail with some ruthless and clinical finishing, they reminded me of Blantyre Victoria when wee Davie Greig had them playing similarly.

We defended poorly, but the strikers weren`t any better as they passed up a host of chances, it looks at times like they are looking for the glory goal, and I couldn`t care less if it went in off their backsides a goals a goal, we need to be more ruthless.

MoTM for Bens was the tireless Scott Jackson who gave his usual 110%, so well done Jacko.

Best player on the park for me was Liam Gormley who gave Bens defence a torrid time of it, he`s way too good for this level of football and the young number 8 Dale Simeon was impressive too.

Onward to next week with another home fixture as we welcome our old friends from Johnstone Burgh. Burgh are going through a rough patch and will be looking to turn things around, hopefully Bens gave away all their presents today and Santa brings some for us, kick off 1.45pm.
