With most of the rest of the SWFL and SWPL on cup duty, Colts and Hutchison Vale Development used the free Sunday to squeeze another friendly in before making a start to their respective league campaigns. And as expected, it was an uphill struggle for the newly formed Colts side when faced with the more experienced Vale side.

Unusually, the sides decided to play three half hour ‘thirds’, with the last thirty-minute spell ending prematurely when a Vale player required medical assistance. Even with the match ending early, Colts were outclassed from the first minute onwards despite showing a few decent glimpses of attacking football.

Colts managed to hold their own in the early stages, but Vale’s experience began to tell as they gradually imposed themselves on the match. Toni Bertram went close when her shot was blocked on the goal line, then moments later the deadlock was broken when Louise Dicken took a touch then calmly sent a shot sailing over the keeper’s head and in from 25 yards.

Within a couple of minutes, they’d went two up after Lyndsay Cowan made a charge down the left hand side before sending inside for Dicken. She knocked the ball forward into the path of the charging Laura Thomson, her deft touch took her through the Broxburn backline and into the penalty area where she sent the ball crashing into the net from 15 yards!

A third goal came along soon afterwards, from a long ball out from the back to Laura Thomson wide on the right. Her run took her to the edge of the byeline where she then turned and rolled the ball into the six-yard box for Chelsea Neil to stroke home from two yards out. This seemed to finally spring Broxburn Colts into action.

The response came when Isla Noon played forward to Claire Curran, who then shot low from 18 yards and then had to watch as the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the upright. But from this chance, Hutchison went straight into attack mode and launched the ball up field, where Laura Thomson picked up and struck home from eight yards out.

Despite being four goals down, Colts started the second third positively. Lisa Dinning fought off a challenge to slide the ball nicely past a defender into the path of Anna Laing as she bore down on goal. Her run took her into the box where she unleashed just wide of goal as she came under the scrutiny from an opposing defender.

Another chance followed soon enough when the ball was played forward to Mandy Woods, who cut the ball inside for Dinning. Her 20-yard shot forced a fantastic save from Kristina Watson who turned round the post for a corner kick, which was forced right across the goal line and just begging for a touch for Colts to pull one back.

The fifth goal came from a fantastic 25 yard Toni Bertram strike, that beat the keepers outstretched arm and crept into the top corner of the Colts net! Broxburn countered with an Isla Noon strike from distance, then she followed up with another from just inside the penalty area with both going just wide.

Hutchison substitute Danielle Cunningham didn’t have to wait long to make it six, when she brought an awkward high ball under control beautifully, turned, cut inside taking out a couple of players in the process, before sending the ball over the keeper’s head from twenty yards. Dicken grabbed her second when she beat the keeper one on one from 15 yards out.

The final third had barely got underway when Vale got stuck in and Gemma Lumsden saved from another Dicken attempt on goal. But no time had passed when another ball was played long for Lucy Meechan to run onto, and shoot from wide past the keeper. She had time for one more before the match ended prematurely, when her 25 yard shot crashed off the post and in.

Broxburn Colts now face the prospect of an opening SWFL match against fellow newbies Linlithgow Rose on Sunday, whilst Hutchison Vale will open their season with an away fixture against Edinburgh South.
