Maryhill v Shettleston – Match Report

Maryhill 1 Shettleston Juniors 5

Report by John Hinshelwood
After the high of last week’s resounding victory over Clydebank, and the media attention on Gavin Stokes’ record breaking goal, Maryhill were brought back to earth with a sound thrashing from promotion contenders Shettleston.
With Stokes missing from the Maryhill line up, there was never any chance of a repeat attempt, but the first half was a strange affair none the less. Despite having the bulk of possession, Maryhill could perhaps have considered themselves fortunate to reach the break only two goals down. The visitors’ clinical finishing saw them two goals ahead after only fifteen minutes courtesy of a 20 yard strike from Ricky McIntosh, and a shot from Martin Welsh who took advantage of an error from the usually reliable Andy Banks.
A McIntosh header brought out a great save from Jack Baker, while Maryhill  had few real chances despite long spells of pressure. Indeed it was Shettleston who came closer to scoring again when a long range effort from Kieran O’Hear forced Jack Baker to make another outstanding save. Colin Preston did miss a good opportunity to bring Maryhill back  into the game, but failed to control the ball  a few yards from goal.
The second half continued in a similar vein with Maryhill pressing to little effect, while the visitors looked threatening whenever they ventured into the Maryhill half. Martin Welsh was a constant menace, and after hitting the post with a powerful drive, he put the game beyond Hill’s reach with two opportunistic strikes midway through the half.
Maryhill’s day was aptly summed up when several players failed to take advantage of an almighty stramash inside the Shettleston six yard box, and when play swung to the other end Gordon McClune’s attempt to clear a high ball into the penalty box spun backwards and  into  the net beyond a stranded and bewildered Jack Baker.
A consolation goal did arrive for Maryhill two minutes from the end when Jamie Docherty shot home from close range following good work from Justin Begg, but in the end there was no escaping the fact that they were well beaten by a better team.
