Whitletts Victoria Announce Name Change

At the Clubs’ Annual General Meeting last Thursday, members of Whitletts Victoria FC agreed to a motion that will see the Club change its’ name from the start of next season to Ayr Whitletts Victoria Community Football Club.

The reasoning behind the move was cited as promoting the fact that the Club is Ayr’s only junior club and to promote the town amongst junior football fans throughout the country while retaining the clubs’ history and heritage which is important to everyone involved at the Club.

By changing the clubs’ name, it is also hoped that the move will attract a wider fan base from throughout the town to support the growth of the Club in recent years.

The move will take effect from the start of the 2018/19 season which will be the 75th anniversary of the Club which was formed in 1944.

Chairman John Dalton stated his hope that the move will enable the club to continue to develop as it has done over the past few years.

“Five years ago, Whitletts Victoria came to within a whisker of folding, with no ground, no money, no manager and only a handful of players who were prepared to play for nothing to keep the club alive.”

“Since then there has been a solid growth of the club both on and off the park. We are not just a junior football club but a community football club. We are now the only team in Ayrshire to have an under 21 side playing in the Glasgow based West of Scotland league where we will compete in the Premier League next season. Over the years this level of the game has proven to be a strong breeding ground for junior football attracting new talent, while during the summer we established our Amateur team that this season will play in the Ayrshire Amateur league.”

“Our development will also continue as we look to establish our own youth teams and other age levels to give local youngsters the chance to play the game and firmly establish our roots in the local community”

“However, to continue our growth we need to also widen our fan base and commercial opportunities and it was felt that this change would be a statement that we are Ayr’s junior football club and represent the whole town while not forgetting our heritage.”

Whitletts Victoria Amateurs made their debut last week with a 3-3 draw against Symington Caledonian at Shaw Park, Symington and followed that up on Saturday with a stunning 4-1 win over Premier League Carrick Amateurs at Belmont Academy.

Mick Young wrote his place in the history books against Symington when he scored the first goal for the Club to cancel out and early penalty for the home side before Tony Balfour rounded the keeper to give Vics the lead just before the break.

Symington had the better of the second half and scored twice to lead 3-2 until Young popped up with his second of the game with ten minutes remaining to secure a draw.

Young was also on target with another brace against Carrick on Saturday. Bryan Paterson opened the scoring for Whitletts with a sublime 25-yard curling effort before a defensive mix up gifted Carrick an equaliser.

Vics regained the lead just before the break when Mick Young headed home a corner and in the second period Jordan Baird extended the Ayr sides’ lead when he capitalised after the visitors keeper had spilled the ball

Young added his second of the game, rounding the keeper late on to complete the scoring and to leave manager Stevie Glass delighted with his teams overall performance.
