Whitletts Victoria In Search Of Next Generation

Report by John Dalton

Whitletts Victoria under 21’s manager John Kelly is on the lookout for players born in 1996 and 1997 to join his squad as they prepare for life in the West of Scotland Premier Division this coming term.

The Ayr club are the ONLY side in Ayrshire to play at this level of the game. After a successful first season, in which they won the Second Division Championship and the Only Sport League Cup, Whitletts have been promoted to the top flight where they will test themselves against the top sides in the country, including Scottish Cup holders Barrhead, runners up Rutherglen Glencairn, Johnstone Burgh, Scottish Cup winners in 2016 and the famous Harmony Row club who have won the games top honour at this level a record five times.

And manager Kelly states that playing the game at this level is great preparation for youngsters making the step up from youth football into the adult game.

“A number of junior clubs in the Glasgow area run teams at this level or have links with clubs as it gives players the chance to develop their game and bridge that gap between youth and adult football.”

“It has proven over many years to be a gateway for many players into the junior game. After a successful first season, a number of our players have been snapped up by other clubs, including Bonnyton Thistle who are playing in the South of Scotland League this season. Obviously, our plan is to help develop local talent to give them the chance to progress and play at the highest level possible, hopefully for Whitletts Victoria juniors.”

“Neil Duffy has shown that he has tremendous faith in young local talent and a number of his first team squad are still aged to play for the under 21’s and that is why the club invest in this level of the game, to identify, nurture and develop young players to play at the highest level that they possibly can.”

Any young player interested in joining the Clubs’ under 21’s should contact John Kelly on 07706 073523
