Ant’s Take Derby Day Honours Against Ashfield

Saint Anthony’s 2 Ashfield 1

Report by Stephen Coutts

Ralph Gamba ended up the hero at McKenna Park as he netted a late winner to snatch a vital victory over promotion rivals Ashfield leaving co-boss Ronnie McDonald ecstatic.

Chris McLaughlin lashed home the opener before getting a second yellow then Joshua Boyd levelled but right at the death Gamba pounced to steal the points for the depleted Ants.

He told The Juniors Info: “It’s a massive three points for us and playing them the last time the same kind of thing happened late on and it was a game of two halves like the old cliché.

“I don’t think we were at the races and I think Ashfield were better at the basics as we weren’t finding guys and we lost two centre halves for this match.

“The game might not have been pretty but you’ve got to adapt and we’re going away thinking we’ve not played that well and we’ve got the three points.

“At the end of the day we’re one up. We’ve went down to 10-men. It’s then 1-1 and the boys have managed to get themselves in and get the good goal late on.

“Credit to the boys as you get a result like that it’s massive for us for where we are just now as there wasn’t a lot of games on in the division.

“The boys are buzzing and there’s a wee bit of belief in the dressing room as we’ve got a few missing but we’re delighted with that result.”

It was Field who looked dangerous early doors and when Keigan Parker fed Joel Kasubandi he took a touch and volleyed over the bar from close range.

Ants keeper Tony Curran had to be sharp to with a top double stop first from Parker and then denying Billy Stevenson on the rebound to keep the score line intact.

Field had a great penalty shout waved away on 31 minutes as Curran rushed out and downed Kasubandi in the box but whistler Alastair Taylor waved it away.

The match came alive after the break with McLaughlin picked up the ball at the halfway line, driving forward, and rifling beyond James Catterson from distance on 66 minutes.

Ants’ goal scorer turned from hero to saint as he picked up his second yellow on 84 minutes for a penalty simulation despite there appearing to be contact in the box.

The Ants dug deep but when Kasubandi turned a throw in to Boyd he made no mistake and levelled from the edge of the box on 86 minutes.

And deep into injury time Brian Henderson collected Andrew Scanlan’s shy to pass the Field backline and square for Gamba to tap home the winner.
