Murgitroyd Links-Up With Keeper Academy

Article by Senior Reporter Tom Scott

SCOTLAND’s longest-running Goalkeeping Coaching Academy has received a welcome boost this week as they enter a new chapter in their 24-year history.

Kevin Toner, third from left, presents sponsorship cheque from Murgitroyd at New Petershill Park

Kevin Toner, Head of U.K. Business Development at Glasgow-based Murgitroyd, attended a coaching session at New Petershill Park, and handed over a sponsorship cheque, which will be used to extend the Academy technology plans focusing on goalkeeping and coach education.

Mr Toner, a former Grade One referee and now a Supervisor covering every level of the game, is the son of former Shettleston Juniors long-serving official Willie Toner, who played his senior football north and south of the border.

Murgitroyd’s involvement is seen by Shot Stoppers coaching staff as a huge step forward in their ambitions to improve goalkeepers from grassroots level through to professional status. One of their former students is David Marshall, who still keeps in regular contact with an Academy which has been blessed with national and domestic success since 1994.

Said Kevin:  “I was immensely impressed with the set-up and very surprised that this highly respected and well organised structure has struggled to attract company sponsorship over many years.

“Murgitroyd are happy to support Shot Stoppers and their excellent work developing goalkeepers for the benefit of goalkeepers themselves and the Scottish game in general. It’s an area that is notoriously difficult to coach. This makes Shot Stoppers’ work all the more valuable to the young and developing goalkeepers within Scottish football.”
