Rangers Slip To Fourth After Defeat To Theesel

Largs Thistle 1 Cambuslang Rangers 0

Report by Graeme Swanson

Cambuslang kicked off in very pleasant conditions, not exactly flip flops and shorts weather but far better than we’ve recently been used to. An expectant crowd of 160 looked forward to this important encounter between the sides placed third  (Lang) and fourth (Largs) in the table.

The Barrfields men started promisingly without really threatening the visitors goal, however the first real chance fell to the ‘Lang.  Molloy and Simeon combined well to create space for prolific scorer John Gemmell but Creag Little’s last gasp interception saved the day for Largs.

Dale Simeon had another chance to score for the visitors but blasted the ball over the bar from a good position.

Largs players McKie and McWaters were stretching the play on both flanks, and a terrific turn of pace and pass by McKie gave McWaters the opportunity to rifle a shot from 10 yards beyond keeper Stewart. The ball crashed off the underside of the bar and possibly over the line, but span back into play.

Despite appeals from the Thistle players, referee Kennedy and his near side lino waved play on. No VAR thank goodness, just good old-fashioned decision making by the referee. I’ve watched the video and still can’t confirm the ball was 100% over the line.

McWaters then brought Laurie McMaster into play and his well struck shot was superbly saved by the ‘Gers keeper. Half time arrived with the game goal-less.

Fifteen minutes into the second half saw a horrendous piece of simulation from the already yellow-carded Ross McKinnon, his attempt to win a penalty as he thudded into the ground resulted in a red card. His extremely slow departure from the pitch resulted in a number of derisive cat calls from the home support and his body language suggested that he knew he’d let his team-mates down.

Theesel capitalised on their numerical advantage just six minutes later, McWaters benefitting from some heady-tennis following a fabulous Fisher throw-in to steer the ball into the net. The same player almost added a second but was thwarted by Stewart.

Largs substitute Campbell saw an acrobatic volley whizz past the post, and the visitors’ Gemmell created a chance for McRobbie, another volley which went wide of Cousar’s right hand post. Campbell came close again before a moment of madness from Craig Molloy, tugging the hair of Theesel defender Jamieson, saw the ‘Lang reduced to 9 men after 76 minutes.

Largs continued to create chances and Adam’s bullet shot from inside the penalty area was palmed away by Stewart, the big keeper was having a good influence on the game. The Theesel support started to worry when Martin Orr became the third player to see red following his tackle on Chris Duff, but Theesel saw out the remaining four minutes and McKie almost put the icing on the cake but was denied once again by Stewart.

Largs will be delighted with the three points and now entertain Larkhall Thistle in their last home league game of the season. Your intrepid reporter is going to that game by bus and train so may not be able to provide a match report if too many beers are consumed. Watch this space!
